McDonald’s: Fast Food with Fast Information

With a greater interest in the nutritional content of our food these days, people want instant information about what they are eating. What better combination than fast food with fast info?

In January, McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) announced that they are launching a new global packaging design with a blend of text, illustrations and a QR code. Mobile users can use their smartphones to scan the QR codes, those square dots that are appearing everywhere. Scanning the QR Code will deliver interesting facts about the brand and will make nutrition information easily accessible from mobile devices.

“Our new packaging is designed to engage with customers in relevant ways and celebrate our brand,” McDonald’s Chief Brand Officer Kevin Newell said in a company press release. “Customers tell us they want to know more about the food they are eating and we want to make that as easy as possible by putting this information right at their fingertips.

McDonald’s gathered consumer input on these new designs and consulted its Global Advisory Council, who emphasized the importance of providing access to nutrition information and support using the packaging to connect customers to facts about menu items.
The new packaging designs began launching in January in the U.S. and will roll out worldwide throughout the year, with the text being translated into 18 different languages.

In addition to using boards, posters, brochures and tray liners at their restaurants, McDonald’s also provides customers with nutritional information about their menu items on the company’s apps in the iTunes App Store and Google Play, and mobile and desktop websites.
